Andy & Mel // Northern Ireland Proposal Session

There are sessions I shoot and then there are sessions I feel. Andy and Mel’s proposal on the Causeway Coast was one of the latter.

I’ve known Andy since he was a teenager. When he came to me wanting to photograph the moment he proposed to Mel, there was never any question about where we’d do it — the Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland, somewhere with the kind of light and landscape that makes a moment like this look the way it deserves to look.

The setup was the same as every Northern Ireland proposal session I shoot. Mel thought she was helping me out — I needed a couple for a shoot to test a new lens, Andy had volunteered them both. She had no idea what was coming. We walked to a spot where the light was extraordinary, I gave Andy the nod, and he got down on one knee.

What happened next is in the photographs.

Mel said yes. The look on her face in the moment she turned around and saw him there is one of the most purely joyful things I’ve ever photographed. Moments like this are a genuine privilege to witness — and the fact that I’ve known Andy for years made it all the more special to be the one behind the camera.
