Ireland Honeymoon Photographer

Ireland is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in the world for couples from the US, and for good reason. The landscape is extraordinary, the coastline is dramatic, the castles are real, and the light does things that photographers spend their whole careers chasing. If you’re spending part of your honeymoon in Ireland, a photography session is the one day of your trip that produces something you’ll still be looking at in thirty years.

I’m Rob Dight, an Ireland honeymoon photographer based on the Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland. I’ve been photographing couples across Ireland for twelve years and have done well over 250 sessions of various kinds. Honeymoon sessions are some of the most relaxed I shoot — you’ve just got married, the pressure of the wedding day is behind you, and you’re in one of the most beautiful places on earth together. That combination tends to produce extraordinary photographs.

A lot of the couples I hear from tell me the same thing — that if it had been entirely up to them, they would have eloped in Ireland. They did the big wedding to please their families, and the honeymoon photography session is their way of having the intimate, landscape-focused experience they actually wanted all along. That context tends to produce some of the most meaningful sessions I shoot.

Sessions run from one hour to a full six-hour day and are available year round across Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Why couples choose Ireland for their honeymoon photography

Ireland has everything that makes for extraordinary honeymoon photographs — medieval castle ruins, Atlantic coastline, ancient basalt formations, mountain lakes, dense forest, and light that changes three times in an hour and looks remarkable in almost any weather. For couples visiting from the US, the Causeway Coast in particular offers more variety within a short drive than most destinations offer across an entire country.

Most of the couples I work with are on their first full trip to Ireland. A photography session built into one day of the honeymoon gives you something the rest of the trip can’t — proper photographs of the two of you in this landscape, taken by someone who knows it well enough to put you in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.

Daniel and his wife Caity flew in from Dayton, Ohio to the Causeway Coast for their honeymoon session:

  • Rob made us feel confident and comfortable

“Working with Rob was a dream. Everything from initial contact, to vendor suggestions, to location selections, to picking up flowers, to driving to each location, and finally to delivery of the photos was a breeze. Rob knows the best locations and the best times depending on time of year or weather. Rob made us feel confident and comfortable to bring out our best selves for the pictures we will cherish for a lifetime.”

How Ireland honeymoon sessions work

Before the session I send you my Ireland travel guide, location recommendations, and timing suggestions based on your dates and the time of year. By the time we meet there are no surprises — every variable I can handle has already been handled.

On the day I ease you in gradually. The opening moments of a session are about letting you breathe and settle into it as much as they are about getting shots. Some couples arrive in their wedding attire — dress, suit, the full thing — and shoot the landscape portraits they felt they missed on the wedding day itself. Others come in casual clothes and treat it as a relaxed day out. Both work. I’m talking to you throughout, giving direction when you need it and stepping back when you don’t. Before photography I worked in counseling with young people — building rapport and putting people at ease in unfamiliar situations is something I did for years before I ever picked up a camera professionally.

Honeymoon sessions tend to have a particular energy. You’ve just got married. The day is yours. There’s nowhere you need to be. That ease shows up in the photographs.

The best places for an Ireland honeymoon session

Dunluce Castle One of the most dramatic locations in the world for couples photography. A medieval ruin on a basalt outcrop above the Atlantic, with a view that stretches across the open ocean. I’ve been here more than 200 times and it still stops me. For honeymoon couples who want something genuinely spectacular, Dunluce delivers every time.

Giant’s Causeway 40,000 interlocking basalt columns built by a volcano 60 million years ago. The scale of it does something to people — you feel genuinely small standing there and the photographs reflect that. Early morning in summer and any time outside of peak season gets you the location with far fewer crowds.

Kinbane Castle For couples who want something remote and wild rather than famous. Kinbane sits on a limestone headland above the sea with almost no other visitors on most days. The walk down to it is part of the experience. If your honeymoon calls for somewhere that feels like the edge of the world, this is it.

The Mourne Mountains Silent Valley reservoir and the open moorland around Hen Mountain give you dramatic mountain scenery with virtually no crowds. Some of the most atmospheric honeymoon sessions I’ve shot have been in the Mournes — the combination of still water, granite peaks, and mountain silence produces images that feel genuinely timeless.

Further into Ireland For couples whose honeymoon takes them south — the Wicklow Mountains, Cliffs of Moher, Kerry, Connemara. The full Ireland elopement guide covers the whole island if you’re still planning your itinerary. Get in touch with your dates and I’ll tell you what’s realistic.

I handle all location planning and timing. You just need to show up.

Frequently Asked Questions about Honeymoon Sessions in Ireland

What is a honeymoon photography session in Ireland? A couples photography session built into one day of your Ireland honeymoon. We spend one to six hours moving through some of the most extraordinary scenery in the world — castle ruins, Atlantic coastline, mountain lakes — and come away with a set of images that document where you were and how it felt to be there together at the start of your marriage.

Where in Ireland do you photograph honeymoon sessions? Primarily across Northern Ireland and the Causeway Coast — Dunluce Castle, Giant’s Causeway, Kinbane Castle, the Dark Hedges, the Mourne Mountains, and the Antrim Coast. Sessions in the Republic — Wicklow, Cliffs of Moher, Kerry, Connemara — are available depending on the date and travel.

How long should a honeymoon session in Ireland be? One hour works well for a single location done properly. Two to four hours is what most visiting couples go for — enough to cover two or three spots without taking over the whole day. A six-hour session lets us build a full itinerary across the landscape and produce a gallery that tells the whole story of where you were.

How much does a honeymoon photography session in Ireland cost? Sessions start at £1,000. The final price depends on session length and locations. Get in touch with your dates and I’ll give you a clear quote.

Should we wear our wedding outfits for our honeymoon session in Ireland? Some couples do and some don’t — both work beautifully. Wearing your wedding dress and suit on the Causeway Coast or in front of Dunluce Castle produces images that are genuinely extraordinary, and for couples who feel like they didn’t get the outdoor, landscape-focused wedding photos they wanted, a honeymoon session in full wedding attire is a way of getting them. Other couples prefer something more relaxed and casual — layers, comfortable shoes, something that feels like a normal day rather than a formal occasion. Either approach produces great photographs. If you’re unsure, get in touch and I’ll give you an honest recommendation based on the locations and what you’re hoping the images look like.

How many photos will we receive? At least 30 fully edited images per hour of shooting. That’s the minimum — I typically deliver more. Every image is fully edited. I don’t pad numbers with near-identical frames.

How long until we get our honeymoon photos? Sneak peeks within seven days. Full gallery within three weeks. Fast-track editing is available for an additional fee if you want your images before you get home from your trip.

When is the best time of year for a honeymoon session in Ireland? Every season produces extraordinary results. Spring and autumn give the most dramatic light with fewer crowds. Summer has the longest golden hours — the sun doesn’t set until nearly 10pm in June — which means a lot of day to work with. Winter is quieter and moodier with the locations almost entirely to yourselves. If your honeymoon dates are fixed, I’ll make them work.

What are the best locations for honeymoon photos in Ireland? Dunluce Castle for drama and scale. Giant’s Causeway for something unlike anywhere else on earth. Kinbane Castle for something wild and remote. The Mourne Mountains for atmosphere and solitude. I’ll always give you an honest recommendation based on your travel dates, session length, and what you’re hoping the photographs look like.

We’re a bit camera shy. Is that a problem? Almost everyone says this and it stops being true about ten minutes in. I spent years before photography doing counseling work with young people — putting people at ease in unfamiliar situations is genuinely one of my strongest skills. I ease you in gradually and I’m talking to you throughout. By the second location most couples have completely forgotten there’s a camera involved.

Do you shoot in the rain? Yes. The light after a rain shower on the Causeway Coast is remarkable and some of my best honeymoon sessions have been on overcast days. I always have a plan B and I’ll brief you on weather before the day so nothing comes as a surprise. If conditions are genuinely unusable we can reschedule.

Can you include drone footage or aerial photos? I have a drone and use it when conditions allow. The Irish coast is unpredictable — wind in particular makes flying impractical more often than not. I never promise drone as part of a session because I don’t want to guarantee something the weather might veto. When conditions are good and the location suits it, I’ll use it and anything worthwhile goes in your gallery.

How far in advance should we book? As far ahead as you know your honeymoon dates. Summer books quickly. That said, I’ve put sessions together on short notice for couples already in Ireland — get in touch regardless of how close your dates are.

Can we add a honeymoon session to our Ireland itinerary? That’s exactly how most sessions work. You’re already visiting Ireland — we build the session into one day of your trip. Once you have your rough dates and a sense of where you’ll be based, get in touch and we’ll figure out what fits.

We wanted to elope in Ireland but did a big wedding for our families. Can a honeymoon session give us those photos? Yes — and this is one of the most common reasons couples book me for a honeymoon session. Coming to Ireland in your wedding attire and spending a few hours on the Causeway Coast or at Dunluce Castle gives you the intimate, landscape-focused experience you originally wanted. Some of the most meaningful sessions I shoot are with couples who are finally doing it their way. If you’re thinking about eloping in Ireland for a future vow renewal, that’s worth exploring too.

About Rob Dight

I’m a photographer based on the Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland. I’ve been photographing couples across Ireland full time for twelve years — elopements, engagements, proposals, anniversaries, and honeymoons, primarily for couples visiting from the US.

Before photography I worked in drug and alcohol counseling with young people. That background shapes how I work more than any camera skill. Getting people to relax, building rapport quickly, making a session feel like a day out rather than a photoshoot — that came before the lens work and shapes everything I do on a honeymoon session.

I’ve photographed well over 300 elopements in Ireland and more than 250 couples sessions across Ireland. My work has been featured on BBC News and I was named in Professional Photo magazine’s Top 50 UK Wedding Photographers. Every session is me — not an associate, not a second shooter filling in.
